I have started to really look forward to these posts as a way to reflect over I have read the previous month, good and not so good. I choose to only share my favorites here. In the past month, I read three books I thoroughly enjoyed.
I started with a memoir. Carry On, Warrior by Glennon Doyle Melton. I started reading this and was blown away by how much I loved it. I appreciated her more recent book, Love Warrior, but I love this one much more. Within the first day of reading it, I was both crying and laughing out loud at different parts. I love how Doyle Melton is able to encompass a range of human experiences and emotions in a way that feels relatable, real and authentic. I would highly recommend this book. She is a person of faith and discusses her feeling on the subject, but I found it to be understanding and open. Book Rating: 5/5
The second book I thoroughly enjoyed was Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson. I have a fascination with books with the protagonist who is an elderly man, and I am currently working on a post summarizing the ones I have read. I loved the way this book considered societal changes. Major Pettigrew is trying to find his way in a world that is filled with change. He struggles with doing the right thing at times and tries to find out what is right for himself. I loved what a likeable character he was and I appreciated the nuance. Book Rating: 5/5
The final book I loved this month was Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. I know I am late to read this one. The only reason I picked it up was that I really enjoyed Little Fires Everywhere. I found this book to be a wonderful exposition of a family dealing with grief and secrets. I liked the way Ng was able to explore the dynamics of a family in a way that felt authentic and true. The book is emotionally challenging, because she makes the families struggles so vivid I found myself emotionally tied to the characters. I appreciated this fact and enjoyed this book. Book Rating: 4/5 What have you been reading? Any suggestions?
